Broadway shutdown extended to January

Theater during the pandemic has almost entirely ceased due to it being impossible to keep social distancing and mask-wearing procedures in place. Broadway isn’t intending to start up again until at least early January. Producers are now offering refunds and exchanges for tickets bought through Jan 3.

Financially, Broadway has been struck hard. The Actors’ Equity Association has been pushing for lawmakers to include arts funding and loans to help those who work in the live performing arts.

The latest extension wiped away many of the shows planned for the fall and some spring shows have even abandoned their plans.

Thomas Schumacher, chairman of the board of the Broadway League, says Broadway will only reopen when it is fully safe for the cast, pit, crew and audience.
