Trump defeats Clinton in 58th Presidential Race (2016)
January 22, 2020
To the surprise of pollsters, news anchors and pretty much anyone who paid attention, Donald J. Trump was elected as the 45th president of the United States.
Trump announced his campaign in New York on June 16, 2015. His main running points were building a wall on the southern U.S. border, creating jobs and Making America Great Again.
After winning the Republican nomination, he was up against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Most thought this election would be an easy win for Clinton, whose political background was far more extensive than Trump’s.
Both campaigns had their controversies, Clinton had her email scandal, and Trump had his Access Hollywood tape.
According to Time, Clinton lead by 14 points in the polls only a month before election day. Even on the day of the election, she was still ahead in most polls by at least four points.
Although she got about 3 million more votes than Trump, Clinton wasn’t able to reach the 270 electoral college votes needed to win, making him the victor.
His election sparked nation-wide protests. From New York City to Los Angeles, citizens took to the streets, voicing their opinion about the president-elect.Chanting things like “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA,” and “Love trumps hate.”
On twitter, hashtags like “#Notmypresident” and “#Imstillwithher” started trending.
Americans from coast to coast were confused,
shocked and upset.
Despite much opposition from Democrats, Trump was sworn into office on Jan. 20, 2017, and has since faced investigations, scandals and impeachment.
Almost four years later and the results of the 2016 election are still a huge topic of conversation.
