What is “Among Us” and why is it so popular?
October 30, 2020
Over the past few months the game “Among Us” has become extremely popular. This is an online multiplayer game that takes place in a space-themed setting. Players each take on one of two roles, the Crewmates, or the Impostor(s). The majority of the players become crewmates, and the other player(s), a predetermined amount, become the impostor(s). It is a virtual take on games like Mafia and One Night Ultimate Werewolf.
Imposters, the players that crewmates are trying to discover to win, main task is to eliminate all of the other players. There is either one, two or three imposters in each lobby depending on what the host of the lobby choses.
Imposters are given advantages over the other players to help them win. They can sabotage specific things by turning off lights, shutting doors and turning off communications; this prevents crewmates from knowing their tasks. They can also vent, which allows them to take a hidden route to another point on the map. This allows them to escape being seen once they kill or get them to other places faster.
Crewmates, on the other hand, aren’t given these advantages. Crewmates can win in two ways. They can either vote out both imposters, or they can complete all of their tasks before the imposters kill every player. Crewmates are given a predetermined amount of tasks to complete and the goal is to finish them all. They also have to fix the things the imposters sabotage.
