Abby Roque made history in her hometown as the only girl on the hockey team.

    Abby Roque, a 24 year old from Sault Ste. Marle, Mich. is making history as the first indigenous female hockey player to play for Team USA in the Olympics. Roque is a member of the Ojibwe tribe of the First Nations of Canada.

     “I’m the only BIPOC (Black, indigenous, and person of color) on this national team. [I’m] proud of being indigenous and where I come from,” she said.

     Roque has been playing ice hockey since she was 4 years old after being inspired by her dad, who coached hockey in her hometown. Her love for hockey has brought her to the University of Wisconsin where she plays for the Wisconsin’s Badgers of the Big Ten conference. rnational Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship tournaments twice. She represented the U.S at the 2021 “My Why Tour” and took gold at the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship in 2015. Roque is excited to further her hockey career in Beijing, China for the 2022 Olympics.
