NHS takes over Clothing Closet

“When we are organizing the clothing, if there is anything that students say, ‘Hey this is a little too worn we don’t wanna offer it here,’ or if it's out of style we will then take that and donate it to goodwill,” said Grove.

The National Honors Society, run by advisor Rachel Grove and Andrea Unger, are taking over the clothing closet to provide students an opportunity to help students with limited access to clothing and will open as soon as inventory has been taken.

Originally the closet was just for students in need but NHS wants to make it for all students, and remove any stigma that is attached to free clothing.

“We are going to open it up to everybody in the school. So it is basically going to be like a thrift store type of event,” said Grove. “We are going to pull out clothing racks and then students will be able to go there and looks through clothing and take clothing home for free.”

The closet will have all types of clothing from shirts and pants to dresses and shoes.

“It was Eleena Basile’s idea. She was interested in helping out with the clothing closet… As advisors we said “lets do it”,” said Grove.

Basile heard about York Suburban’s success with an in-school clothing closet for students. It sparked and idea and and inspired her to stake a step back and reflect on the school as a whole.

“Central is very diverse, and while we have families that aren’t always able to afford clothing, we also have plenty of families that are able and willing to help fellow panthers in need,” said Basile. “I plan to eventually bring this project to all schools in our district so we can further spread this opportunity and lend a helping hand to all those who need it.”

The clothing closet prefers new items; however, they do accept lightly worn clothing. The rise in thrift shopping is a focus for members of the society and they hope to bring unique clothing choices to the student body.

Students are allowed to donate to the closet if they would like to. Currently, NHS students are donating, and they also sent out fliers to the community and have already received prom attire.

If students donate, they should just bring those items to Grove in  room 508 or to Unger in room 605.
