Elizabeth Warren is one of four women who make up approximately one third of the possible Democratic candidates. However, Warren is familiar with being one of the only women around. 

Growing up, she was the youngest in her family, three older brothers preceding her. Warren grew up in Oklahoma; her father was a maintenance man and her mother a stay-at-home mom. 

Moving on from life in Oklahoma; Warren had goals of becoming a teacher. She attended college in Texas while teaching locally with special needs children. Warren then moved on to law school and graduated from Rutgers. She hopped around, teaching law at institutions like University of Houston, University of Texas-Austin, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania and Harvard, in addition to Rutgers. 

She has two children, Amelia and Alex, and, after her first marriage to Jim Warren, is currently married to Bruce Mann. According to the New York Times, Warren wasn’t always a Democrat. Until 1996, Warren was a registered Republican.

The 70-year-old has served Massachusetts as a senator since 2013. Before this, Warren served as the Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel and also established the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In addition, Warren served as an aid to President Barack Obama. 

Currently, Warren is running on a few platforms. One of the largest plans she has includes imposing a tax to the wealthy.

Warren said, “When government works only for the wealthy and the well-connected, that is corruption, plain and simple, and we need to call it out.” 

Her plans mean that families whose assets reach 50 million will gain a 2 percent annual tax, while families with assets reaching or exceeding 1 billion will have an added 1 percent. 

As far as Second Amendment rights, Warren said her family was familiar with guns, saying, “My family had guns when I was growing up.” But, as far as her current stance goes, she is pulling for better regulations. 

“We have a moral responsibility to protect our children, and that starts with better gun safety laws,” Warren said in an interview with the New York Times. 

Warren also finds healthcare imperative, saying, “healthcare is a basic human right.” As for the Affordable Care Act, Warren wants to help defend it. “We need to… reduce the cost of prescription drugs.” 

According to her campaigning site, Warren also is passionate about issues concerning public school education, LGBTQ+ rights and the climate crisis.
