Holiday treats are everywhere around Thanksgiving and Christmas. There is a variety of Christmas treats like chocolate chip cookies, fudge, banana pudding, eggnog, candy canes, and apple pie. In many family traditions, the recipes to your favorite desserts are passed down from person to person. When asking Central students what their favorite holiday desserts were many said homemade cookies.

“I like sugar cookies”, said sophomore Lindsey Kress.

Sugar cookies are a favorite for many people around and are very versatile. You can put icing, sprinkles, and powdered sugar on sugar cookies.

“As a child, my mother loved doing traditions like decorating sugar cookies with my sister. I loved to put icing and sprinkles on my sugar cookies” sophomore Qudadir McNeal said.

Baked goods aren’t the only favorites that exist around the holiday.

“I like cookies and candy canes,” said Junior Brett Shutg.

Candy canes are used in most Christmas traditions and are hung on Christmas trees. Other countries celebrate holidays with desserts as well. According to tasteofhome.com, in Holland, a traditional holiday treat are Dutch Speculaas. Dutch Speculaas are similar to windmill cookies made in the United States, they are made and served on December 6 or St. Nicholas Day. Bûche de Noël or French Yule log cake is a dessert that is served in France during December. Bûche de Noël is a chocolate sponge cake with icing on top. Another dessert is Rugelach, which is a Jewish dessert. Rugelach is a pastry filled with many different fillings like cream cheese, raspberry and poppy seeds.

Holiday treats vary from culture to culture but despite this, Central students and their families carry on a dessert-tradition each holiday season.
